1 dead, 4 injured after altercation leads to East Dallas shooting, police say

A late-night argument outside an East Dallas convenience store spiraled into violence early Sunday, leaving one person dead and four others wounded.

Police said officers responded to reports of a shooting around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, at a strip mall in the 8300 block of La Prada Drive.

Police said four people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, while 21-year-old Jacob Cuellar died at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect.

Surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store captured a fight breaking out moments before shots were fired.

“There was some dude that was yelling out there. [Then] there were gunshots,” said a store employee who was closing up when the shooting began. The worker, who asked to remain anonymous, said fights often happen at the shopping center.

“When somebody loses their life, it’s gone too far,” he said.

The parking lot still bears traces of past violence — bullet holes and a small memorial from another deadly shooting nearly a year ago. That earlier incident, which occurred on Aug. 18, 2024, also claimed one life.

The latest shooting happened after a private party at Fire Orchard, a club located in the same shopping center.

In a written statement, the club’s manager said, “My heart goes out to everyone affected,” and added that the venue will implement “extra top-line security” moving forward.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
