Lexington man charged with gun possession after S.C. State shootings

Another person has been arrested in connection with the multiple shootings at South Carolina State University that left one dead and two injured during homecoming weekend on Oct. 4, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Jimmy Lee Thompson Jr., an 18-year-old from Lexington County, faces charges of carrying a weapon on school property, SLED announced Thursday. He was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.

According to an arrest warrant, SLED agents found a loaded handgun under a chair in a common area at the Hugine Suites Building, a student residence hall at S.C. State. Thompson had been sleeping in the chair and was the only person in the common area at the time. The First Circuit Solicitor’s Office will handle the prosecution.

Thompson is the second person charged in connection with the shootings. Matthew Daniel McCoy, an 18-year-old from Blythewood, was previously charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person and carrying a weapon on school property.

SLED said a woman was killed in the first shooting on the Orangeburg campus. She was identified as Jaliyah Butler, a 19-year-old from Saluda. A man was hospitalized after being shot in the second incident, and another person was injured while fleeing the scene of the first shooting.

University officials confirmed that none of the victims were S.C. State students.

SLED continues to actively investigate the case, with the FBI providing technical assistance for digital media analysis. Anyone with information is urged to contact SLED at 866-472-8477 or email [email protected]. Video footage or recordings can also be uploaded to fbi.gov/scstateuniversityshootings.
